In deze eerste aflevering uit Pakula's 'paranoia trilogie' (verder met The Parallax View en All the President's Men) zet de provinciale detective John Klute (Sutherland) een onderzoek in naar de vermissing van een vriend. Hierbij stuit hij op het New Yorkse hoertje Bree (Fonda), dat hij nauwlettend bespiedt in de hoop op aanwijzingen. In plaats van de gebruikelijke Hollywoodse snelle successen, tast John Klute lang in het duister, wat prettig realistisch overkomt. Het onderzoek schiet niet op, maar ondertussen leren we Klute en Bree goed kennen.
