Apple TV+ won afgelopen nacht als eerste streamingdienst de Oscar voor beste film met CODA, een coming-of-agefilm van Sian Heder over een horende dochter van dove ouders.

De afgelopen tien jaar zijn de Oscars zo’n driekwart van hun kijkers kwijtgeraakt, en dus verliep de avond in Los Angeles anders dan anders. Zo werd een flink deel van de prijzen al uitgereikt voor de officiële ceremonie, tot onvrede van veel filmmakers. De grootste verrassing kwam echter niet uit de koker van de producenten van de uitreiking: enkele minuten voordat hij een Oscar zou winnen voor zijn hoofdrol in King Richard stormde Will Smith het podium op en gaf hij komiek Chris Rock een klap, omdat deze een grap over het haar van zijn vrouw (Jada Pinkett-Smith, die aan de haaraandoening alopecia areata lijdt) had gemaakt. Toeschouwers in de zaal dachten aanvankelijk dat het bij de show hoorde, maar dat was niet het geval.

Die hoofdprijs van de avond ging naar CODA van regisseur Sian Heder. De Amerikaanse remake van de Franse film La famille Bélier (2014), die op het filmfestival van Sundance in première ging en wereldwijd te zien is op streamingdienst Apple TV+, won daarnaast ook de Oscars voor beste mannelijke bijrol (Troy Kotsur) en beste scenario. De film draait om het dilemma van Ruby, de horende dochter van dove ouders. Kiest ze voor zichzelf en jaagt ze haar droom na om zangeres te worden, of blijft ze haar gezin helpen als schakel naar de horende wereld?

Netflix-productie The Power of the Dog, vooraf de grote favoriet met maar liefst twaalf nominaties, werd uiteindelijk slechts éénmaal bekroond, voor beste regie (Jane Campion). Scifi-spektakel Dune werd de grote winnaar in de technische categorieen: de film van Denis Villeneuve won zes Oscars, waaronder beste cinematografie (Greig Fraser) en beste soundtrack (Hans Zimmer).

Bij de actrices gingen de prijzen naar Jessica Chastain voor haar titelrol in The Eyes of Tammy Faye en Ariana DeBose voor haar bijrol als Anita in Steven Spielbergs West Side Story.

Het Japanse drama Drive My Car, dat ook was genomineerd in de Best Picture categorie, won de Oscar voor beste internationale film. De prijzen voor beste lange animatiefilm en beste documentaire gingen respectievelijk naar Encanto en Summer of Soul (beide te zien op Disney+).
