Maandagochtend zijn in Los Angeles de nominaties voor de 93ste Academy Awards bekend gemaakt. Mank van David Fincher sleepte de meeste nominaties in de wacht (10), onder meer voor beste film, beste regie en beste mannelijke hoofrol.

Mank gaat over de moeizame totstandkoming van het scenario voor Orson Welles’ filmklassieker Citizen Kane (1941). De vele nominaties zijn dan ook bepaald geen verrassing, want films over Hollywood doen het altijd goed bij de Academy.

Naast Mank maken nog zeven films kans op de Oscar voor beste film. Van die zeven moeten er maar liefst vijf nog in Nederland worden uitgebracht. Nomadland van Chloé Zhao (The Rider) zal in ieder geval vanaf 30 april te zien zijn via Disney Plus, en mogelijk al eerder in de bioscoop. De Nederlandse bioscooprelease van Judas and the Black Messiah staat voorlopig op 8 april, The Father op 20 mei en Minari op 5 augustus.

Streamingdiensten en Nederlandse coproducties

Streamingdiensten deden in dit coronajaar goede zaken. Met name Netflix sleepte veel nominaties in de wacht: naast de tien nominaties voor Mank maken ook de documentaires My Octopus Teacher en Crip Camp kans op een gouden beeldje, net als de speelfilms The Trial of the Chicago 7 (zes nominaties) en Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (vijf nominaties).

Grote concurrent Amazon scoorde vooral in de acteurscategorieën met Sound of Metal en One Night in Miami. En ook documentaire Time werd genomineerd.

Drie Nederlandse coproducties dingen mee naar een Oscar: Quo Vadis, Aida? en Another Round (Druk) in de categorie beste niet-Engelstalige film en The Mole Agent in de categorie beste documentaire.

De prijsuitreiking van de 93ste Academy Awards vindt plaats op zondag 25 april. In Nederland is de uitreiking dit jaar live te zien op Fox.
