De bezoekers van VPRO Cinema stemden de afgelopen weken op hun favoriete films van 2017. Van de 1672 deelnemers kreeg Moonlight van Barry Jenkins de meeste punten.

1. Moonlight

Aangrijpend en prachtig gefilmd portret van Chiron, een homoseksuele zwarte jongen die opgroeit in één van de ruigste buurten van Miami. Won vele prijzen, waaronder drie Oscars, en is door de lezers van VPRO Cinema nu verkozen tot beste film van 2017.

2. Manchester by the Sea

Bijna ondraaglijke somberheid, maar regisseur Lonergan portretteert zijn antihelden met veel mededogen en hoofdrolspeler Casey Affleck maakt diepe indruk.

4. Dunkirk

Visueel verbluffende WO II-film, waarbij de kijker midden in de actie wordt geplaatst. Camerawerk is van Nederlander Hoyte van Hoytema.

8. Get Out

Regiedebuut van komiek Jordan Peele is niet alleen grappig, maar ook bloedstollend eng en sociaal relevant.

9. Loveless

Duistere en elegante thriller van de Russische filmmaker Andrej Zvyagintsev (The Return). Na The Square de hoogst genoteerde niet-Engelstalige film in de lijst.
